RIO DE JANEIRO - Sugar Loaf - Corcovado

This distinctive natural landmark rises 396m above Guanabara Bay in Urca, a charming enclave of shaded streets, early 20th century residences and the waterfront Bar Urca (T 2295 8744). Take the cable car (T 2295 8400) from Avenida Pasteur to the first peak, Morro da Urca (220m), then on to Pao de Açucar itself.

Corcovado - Cristo Redentor -
The 38m-high art deco statue of Chirst the Redeemer sits 710m above sea level on Corcovado. This massive, instantly identificable figure is surprisingly striking close up. Designed by artist Carlos Oswald and executed by the French sculptor Paul Landowski, it was unveiled in 1931 ; engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was in charge of the project. It faces towards Sugar Loaf, with its left arm pointing towards the Maracana and its right stretching out to Leblon. The statue can be reached very pleasantly by track through Parque Nacional da Tijuca. However, the fastest way up is to catch the train from Estaçao de Ferro do Corcovado in Cosme Velho.
