LISBOA - Bairro Alto - Chiado - Carpe Diem

Bairro Alto -

Carpe Diem - Arte e Pesquisa - The Pombal Palace, located in the street O Século, is a sixteenth century building in plain architecture, that was built by Sebastião de Carvalho e Melo, grandfather of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, future Marquis of Pombal. The palace was the favourite residence of the Pombal family until the earthquake of 1775, after which they moved to Ajuda. The following years were of renovation and aggrandizement of the Palace, which coincided with the political rise of the Marquis.
Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa is a platform for research, experimentation and studies in the field of contemporary art founded in 2009. Presents a multidisciplinary and plural structure to the visual arts, with the intent of providing a network for the exchange of information between artists, theorists, students, producers and audience.

Teresa Henriques - Carpe Diem's Drawing, 2015

The work Carpe Diem Drawing is a site specific installation. It is an evolution from the works Rooster´s Drawing (USA) and the Pedro Oliveira´s Drawing (PT). This drawing was inspired by the existing colors of the main staircase of the Pombal Palace. A tone of blue and a tone of orange. It’s composed of cables, cotton and wool strings, pulleys and a windlass. It is the movement of the windlass situated at the top of the staircase that generates the different patterns of the drawing that are perceived in different manners according to the position of the viewer. Special thanks to Hanken and especially to Peter Harken who made this project possible with the donation of the windblass.

Renata Cruz - Instabilidade no Palácio, 2015

The installation Instabilidade no Palácio [Instability at the Palace] was born from a long dialogue of the artist with the palace. The first visit was in 2009, the second in 2013 at the time of her solo show at Quase Galeria in Porto and the third one now as a residency. In these weeks of residency the artist decided to build an installation with drawings that contain images of tiles and other references of Portugal and Brazil. This work is the result of a composition based on references/culture/identity/language made specifically for the rooms chosen and in the sense of raising questions about drift and instability in general.
The work process started with the compilation of books and other materials related to the topics mentioned above and specifically the work of Virginia Woolf. Ives Klein and Mayra Kalman are also a strong visual influence in the artist´s development of this residency.

Pedro Valdez Cardoso - Expedition, 2015

This project aims to create a device around a tapestry work. This is the central point of the conceptual and formal development of the works that constitute the installation. The Polar Regions have, since the XIX century, accompanied the cultural and social imaginary; the concepts generated around these geographical areas belong to the domains of utopia and science. A distant place, almost inhabited, where the preservation of fossils, made possible by the low temperatures, generates the discovery of the origins of mankind in this planet.

Carla Cabanas - Celtis austratralis L., 2015

This project contains two moments: an exterior and an interior. Both are born from the idea, developed by the artist in residency, whose starting point are the leaves of the trees in the garden. In this process the artist acquired random photographs at the Feira da Ladra in Lisbon. These were then scanned and printed by ink jet process on previously laser cut paper. The final work is an installation that works as a metaphor and it occupies one of the rooms in the palace and the fountain in the garden. For the artist, the main focus of the work is the point in which the installation on the garden is exposed to climate elements, such as wind and sun, and its consequent transformation. The 13.200 leaves are a metaphor for the process of life and its evolution. The visitor will be confronted, in the words of the artist, by the poetics of time.

Oxana Ianin - Doc.1, 2015

Because of the nature of her documental work, Oxana Ianin developed for her residency program a process of capturing the different dynamics and interactions of the goers of Carpe Diem. In this project public, staff , artists and national and international art agents interact. This mixture generates a dynamics that is centered on the question of contemporary art production versus heritage, a building that was abandoned and the responsibility of generating the production and documentation of new works.

Cafeteria, with the motto "Palate Artist", perceive the food as a form of art, introducing new combinations of flavors and concepts inspiring visual and gastronomic adventures. It offers original snacks made in collaboration with some of our artists.
